Three Counties. Endless Landscapes. Countless Connections.
The Nickel Plate Trail is a 46.9-mile rail-trail stretching from Kokomo to Rochester, connecting communities across Howard, Miami, and Fulton counties. Built on a former Norfolk Southern rail line through the federal railbanking program, it’s designed for walking, biking, running, and other non-motorized use.
The trail passes through small towns like Peru, Bunker Hill, and Denver, offering a smooth, wide surface with an easy grade—perfect for all ages and experience levels. A mix of open farmland and shaded stretches follows—and occasionally crosses—scenic waterways like the Wabash and Eel Rivers and Little Pipe Creek.
Along the way, discover local history and natural beauty: Scout Bridge and a historic dam near Peru, and remnants of the old Union Traction interurban line near Bunker Hill. Woodlands and wetlands support diverse wildlife, so no two visits feel exactly the same.
Well maintained and easy to explore, the Nickel Plate Trail delivers a simple promise: fresh air, scenic views, and a new connection waiting just around the bend.
