Towns Along the Trail

Eleven towns can be found along the 40+ miles of the trail. Enjoy the sights and sounds of these small Indiana towns.

Rochester

Known as “The Round Barn Capital of the World”, Rochester is located in Fulton County, Indiana. Rochester is home to Lake Manitou, a popular boating and fishing attraction during the summer.

Macy

Macy is a small town in northern Miami County. Macy was laid out in 1860 when the railroad arrived in the neighborhood. It was originally named Lincoln but had to be renamed when it was discovered that another Lincoln already existed in Cass County. For more information, click here.

Deedsville

Deedsville is an unincorporated community located in northern Miami County.  It was laid out in 1870 shortly after the railroad had been completed. For more information, click here.

Denver

Denver is located in northern Miami County and is home to North Miami School Corporation. It was laid out in 1872 and is named after Denver, CO. Denver hosts the Denver Days Festival from Thursday through Sunday the second weekend in August each year.  It features a parade, food, car show, and entertainment. For more information, click here.

Peru

Peru is located in central Miami County and is the county seat. It is home to Peru School Corporation and is nicknamed the Circus Capital of the World. It was founded in 1834 by William N. Hood. It is the birthplace of Cole Porter and Ole Olsen and home to the Miami Indians. It is also the former home to seven of the world’s greatest circuses and the current location of the International Circus Hall of Fame. During the third week of July Peru Amateur Circus holds performances during the whole week ending with the Circus City Festival and Parade on Saturday. For more information about Peru, click here. Bunker Hill

Bunker Hill is located in central Miami County and home to Maconaquah School Corporation, Grissom Air Reserve and Grissom Air Museum. It was laid out in 1851 and has a rich racing heritage. Currently it is home to the Bunker Hill Drag Strip and the Bunker Hill Speedway. It is also the birthplace to James Forman “Tod” Sloan, an American thoroughbred horse racing jockey, who made the forward seat style of racing known as the “monkey crouch” popular. For more information click here.

Bennett’s Switch

Bennett’s Switch is an unincorporated community located in southern Miami County. It was laid out after the Lake Erie and Western Railroad was built through the vicinity.  It was named after Baldwin M. Bennett, a New York native. For more information click here.

Cassville

Cassville is an unincorporated community located in northern Howard County. It was originally named Pleasant Spring, but was renamed in 1854 for Lewis Cass a U.S. Senator from Michigan. For more information click here.

Kokomo

Kokomo is located in and the county seat of Howard County. It is home to Kokomo School Corporation and Indiana University of Kokomo. It was named for the Native American Ma-Ko-Ko-Mo who was called “Chief Kokomo”.  It is known as the “City of Firsts” due to the significant number of technical and engineering innovations developed there.”America’s First Car” was developed in Kokomo in 1894 by Elwood Haynes. Kokomo is also home to the Kokomo Automotive Museum and the Elwood Haynes Museum. For more information click here.
